Micromobility battery-swap stations
Taiwan's Gogoro operates large network of micromobility battery-swap stations that played a crucial role in stabilizing the electric grid during a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on April 3, 2024. These stations, used for electric scooters, stopped drawing power from the grid, reducing demand by six megawatts, which helped prevent blackouts. The stations are part of a virtual power plant (VPP) system developed in collaboration with Enel X, providing flexibility by charging batteries during low-demand periods and potentially supplying power back to the grid during high-demand times.
This initiative points towards a future where the proliferation of micromobility hubs can provide a significant degree of local resilience by ensuring the continued operation of essential electric mobility services, as well as contributing to local electric power network resilience through integration into microgrids.
