Interactive decision support for local governments
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded 12 grants totalling $2m to small businesses to develop an interactive decision support tools for state and local transportation agencies. These projects will advance the Complete Streets AI Initiative, the goal of which is to create an interactive decision support tool for state and local transportation agencies to dynamically generate maps and visualizations that support planning and operation of streets for all users regardless of mode of transportation. Specific AI use cases include computer vision tools for identification of pedestrian infrastructure features, pavement defects, and near-miss incidents from street imagery. The Complete Streets AI Initiative will invest more than $15 million in total in related efforts in the coming years.
As innovation funding agencies invest in AI-enabled solutions for interactive decision support tools for local governments, these tools will become more effective and widely available, supporting continuous and iterative planning for more human-centered, resilient urban environments.
