Blue-green roofs

AI is enabling the development of automated rooftop systems infrastructure for capturing, storing, and releasing or recycling stormwater. Amsterdam's RESILIO project, is equipping 10,000 square meters of "blue-green" rooftops on public housing and commercial office buildings that combine vegetation (green) with water storage systems (blue) and smart technologies to optimize water retention and release. Similarly, Toronto-based RainGrid is commercializing automated systems to monitor and manage rooftop rainwater diversion systems for local reuse and controlled release to municipal stormwater systems.

As the technology of automated blue-green roofs spreads, it will provide multiple neighoborhood-scale climate adaptation benefits: reducing neighborhood flooding, cooling urban heat islands, fostering biodiversity, and promoting well-being through access to nature.
